Wastewater treatment - Wastewater treatment - Sludge treatment and disposal: The residue that accumulates in sewage treatment plants is called sludge (or biosolids). Sewage sludge is the solid, semisolid, or slurry residual material that is produced as a by-product of wastewater treatment processes. Sewage sludge Characteristics Sewage sludge is a kind of waste coming from municipal wastewater treatment plants. In these facilities, high quantities of water are treated every day to eliminate bacteria, viruses and pollutants. As main output, these plants produce treated water and sewage sludge.   Treatment of municipal wastewater results worldwide in the production of large amounts of sewage sludge. The major part of the dry matter content of this sludge consists of nontoxic organic compounds, in general a combination of primary sludge and secondary (microbiological) sludge. The sludge also contains a substantial amount of inorganic material and a small amount of toxic .

Last year, researchers at the University of Wolverhampton in the UK reported the results of a pilot study on the precious metal contents of sewage sludge, finding gold, silver, platinum.
